The met station at Fox Bay was the responsibility of the current Wireless operator/ postmaster. Readings of pressure, temperature and wind speed were relayed to Stanley twice a day in order for a forecast on the announcements of an evening to be more accurate. (Carcass/ West Point did this too). The FIGAS pilots often requested updates at other times before they set off. A calm morning could turn windy around 9 o'clock. My mother (May Maddocks) had a telescope so that she could read the windspeed from up at the met-station by standing on a chair at the kitchen window. The met- station gate was always shut, children were not allowed in unless accompanied. |
